Llena, Tuitt capture mixed doubles title

Strong play at the net propelled a Caledon- Belfountain pair to win the Caledon-Dufferin Mixed Doubles championship held at Caledon Tennis Club recently.

Kathy Tuitt of Caledon and Robert Llena of Belfountain won the A Flight title after beating Lori Batch and Robert Maciag of Bolton in the final 6-3, 6-4. It was their first championship together.

Tuitt and Llena reached the final after defeating Yuliana Vovk and Jeff Morris of Bolton in the semifinals 6-2, 7-6. Batch and Maciag advanced after a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over defending champions Cheryl Mitchell of Belfountain and Alfred Tuitt of Caledon in the other semifinal.

In the A Flight consolation final, Wendy Gray of Palgrave and Mike McKeever of Belfountain topped Linda Macdonald of Caledon and Greg Schwarze of Bolton 7-6, 6-1.

Tournament chairman Phil Staite presented the Caledon-Dufferin Mixed Doubles B Flight championship trophy to winners Jennifer Frolick and Bill Frolick. The runnersup were Betty Scott and Rod Sanders (right).
In the B Flight main draw, the husband and wife team of Bill and Jennifer Frolick of Caledon East took the championship with a hard-fought victory over Rod Sanders and Betty Scott of Mono Centre in the final 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

In the semifinals, the Frolicks beat Jim Reid and Victoria Staite of Caledon 6- 2, 7-5 while Sanders and Scott outlasted the husband and wife team of Adrian and Ruth Grice of Caledon East 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In the B Flight consolation final, the husband and wife team of Joe and MaryLou Hurley of Palgrave thumped Bob Crease and Rose Weyer- Keller of Caledon in the final 6-0, 6-2.

There were 15 teams entered in the A Flight draw and 10 teams in the B Flight draw.

Tournament chairman Phil Staite did another excellent job running the tournament.

The main sponsors were Sport-Medic Physiotherapy Clinic in Orangeville, ACTS Headwaters Family Fitness & Tennis in Mono, and We Love Tennis in Brampton.

The players also enjoyed a fabulous dinner-dance at the Belfountain Inn on the Saturday night of the weekend event.
