Caledon East residents ask council for a sidewalk
By ALAN LICZYK Staff Reporter

A petition signed by 39 Caledon East homeowners was submitted to Caledon council recently requesting a sidewalk be constructed along Airport Road from Leamster Trail to Walker Road.

One of the residents, Peter McDonald, told council their 39 homes are made up of retired families, empty nesters and young families. He added walking on the shoulder of Airport Road between Leamster Trail and Walker Road is very dangerous. He believes there is a lot of space for a sidewalk.

Councillor Richard Whitehead agreed there needs to be a safe pedestrian way. He wanted to get confirmation from staff that the road allowance is wide enough. He suggested looking into putting in a temporary asphalt walkway.

McDonald replied an asphalt walkway would be satisfactory if set back from the road inside the ditch.

Craig Campbell, director of public works and engineering, told council paving the shoulder of the road is not an option. He agreed with the proposed resolution from council to refer the matter to public works and engineering for a report to be brought back to the Aug. 7 council meeting.

Councillor Richard Paterak said council has always wanted pedestrian connectivity and anything the Town can do would make it better.
