The Caledon-Dufferin Men's and Women's Singles tournament held at Bolton Tennis Club over the weekend saw a new champion emerge in the women's event while the defending champions in the two men's events retained their respective titles.

Yuliana Vovk of Bolton won the first women's singles tournament of her young career by beating two-time defending champion Gisela Nouisser of Bolton in the final 6-2, 6- 1.

Vovk advanced to the final after rallying from a 5- 2 deficit in the semifinals to beat Katy Koch of Erin 8-5. Nouisser won her semifinal match over Beth Staite of Caledon 8-2.

Alan Liczyk of Bolton won his second straight men's open singles championship and fifth title in the last seven years defeating Robert Mrowca- Migiel of Bolton in the final 6-2, 6-0.

In semifinal action, Liczyk doubled the score on Phil Staite of Caledon 10-5 while Mrowca-Migiel edged Jeff Morris of Bolton 10-8.

In the men's over-50 singles, Mike McKeever of Belfountain won the championship for the second straight time in as many attempts downing Robert Maciag of Bolton in the final 6-2, 6-3.

In the semifinals, McKeever thumped John Fallis of Mono Centre 8-1 while Maciag got past Adrian Grice of Caledon East 8-5.

During the trophy presentations, Vovk dedicated her successful triumph to her regular hitting partner Liczyk who helped her with some strategy tips prior to her semifinal and final matches. She executed her new game plan fabulously by attacking on short shots hit by her opponents and putting away volleys and overheads at the net.

Liczyk, likewise, dedicated his victory to Vovk for inspiring him to reach new heights in his play.

After winning the men's over-50 tournament again, McKeever said next year he may give the men's open singles a shot.

The tournaments were superbly organized for a seventh straight year by Vaughan Grater and Gary McCaslin with help from Larry Campbell.

A wonderful lunch was again provided by Gisela Nouisser.

Prizes were donated by We Love Tennis in Brampton owned by Bolton and Palgrave tennis instructors Greg Schwarze and Charles Gembes.
