Safety tips now that school is out

The summer months are here and school has come to a close. The excitement level of children is high. Be on the lookout for children running, walking and cycling.

Safety Tips

for Motorists

* Obey all traffic rules, especially speed limits and stop signs in places where children might be, such as neighbourhood parks, schools and playgrounds.

* Remember children are small and generally hard to see.

* Watch for additional bicycles on the roadways.

* Leave a safety zone when passing cyclists.

* Look in your side mirror and blind spot before open a car door when parked on the street.

* When making a right turn, check the curb to ensure you do not cut off a cyclist.

for Children * Be extra careful when crossing the street. * Always cross at an intersection.

* Always wear your bike helmet when you ride.

* Never go anywhere with a stranger. If a stranger talks to you, move away fast.

* Always let whoever is looking out for you, know where you are going and whom you will be with - even if it is just next door.

for Parents

* At any age, know where your children are, whom they are with and what they are doing.

* Discuss house rules and your expectations with them before trouble arises.
