Safety Tips

for Homeowners

Why are some properties victimized and others are not?

What makes one property more susceptible to criminal attack than others?

Ask yourself. Does landscaping or fencing obscure views from neighbouring properties or streets?

Are there any adult-sized hiding spots around my doors or windows?

Are there areas of contrast and shadow around my building where intruders can linger undetected?

Do I leave valuables in plain view of passersby - is the garage door left open for hours on end or even over night?

Tips for Homeowners

Consider adding motionactivated lights.

Reducing landscaping or altering fencing so that intruders can be kept under observation.

Consider better control of undesired movements onto and within your property by installing landscaping or fencing that creates barriers to increase the conspicuousness of anyone breaching a boundary. For business as well as residences, this can be done through strategically placed markers, flowerbeds, low fences, walls, hedges and signage.

Always make sure your driveway is shoveled, grass is cut and your papers are picked up if you are away from home for any extended period of time.

Always secure your home's doors and windows even if you are in the backyard of your property.

If your home is equipped with a security system, activate it when away and at night.

Tips for Vehicle

Owners

Always lock your vehicle, even while in your driveway.

Never leave valuables in your vehicle while unattended, even for just a few moments.

Park the vehicle in a locked garage whenever possible.

Never leave your vehicle running while unattended.

Keep your car keys in a secure location inside your home when not in use.

Be aware of suspicious persons and vehicles in your neighbourhood and report suspicious activities to police, including license plate information and suspect description immediately.
