Support for hangars

Caledon council is throwing its support behind a petition requesting the Canadian government refrain from destroying any of the eight remaining hangars at Camp Borden and have the government provide financial support for the preservation of this national historic site.

In his motion, Councillor Allan Thompson noted the Royal Flying Corps Canada hangars of Camp Borden, the birthplace of Canada's Air Force, were the first purpose-built military aircraft hangars in Canada and are now the oldest example of this type of construction in Canada.

He added these hangars housed the first, largest and most significant Canadian component of a Canadian-British aircrew training program to supply qualified Canadian aircrew for active duty in Europe during the First World War and played a significant role in the evolution of Canadian military aviation.
