Ontario Cup soccer tournament comes to Bolton Bolton Wanderers Soccer Club is official host of this year's tournament round of the girls under 14 Ontario Cup Competition. The Ontario Cup is the province's most sought after competitive team title and dates back to 1901. 2007 tournament play began in May with some 600 boys and girls teams from across the province competing in a total of 22 divisions. Provincial champions in each division will determined this September. Ontario Cup winners advance to the National Championships usually played on Thanksgiving weekend in various provinces across Canada. The Wanderers are honoured and fortunate to host a stage of this prestigious tournament for the very first time in Bolton's soccer history. The two-day round-robin affair, which takes place Saturday, June 16 and Father's Day, June 17, will see Bolton welcome the following under 14 girls clubs: Brams United Dragons, London United Avalanche, Mt Hamilton Avalanche, and Unionville Milliken Strikers. Each team, including our own Wanderers, has its eyes on advancing to the Ontario Cup quarter finals Aug. 11. And, what of the host team's chances in the roundrobin this weekend? Wanderers girls under 14 rep coach, Dave Vanstone had this to pass along: "This will be our second year competing in the Ontario Cup, and we're up against some very stiff competition with London ranked 6th in the province and Unionville ranked 10th. We fully respect all the participating clubs, and feel that we have a talented team that's ready to kick things up notch when required. It's going to be challenging and fun!" Regardless of the outcome, the Wanderers are well represented and there will be some brilliant soccer to take in at Edelweiss Park. Play begins at 11 a.m. Saturday morning. Bolton's first match is at 2 p.m. Sunday's games also kickoff at 11 a.m. Tournament co-chairs, Nick Indelicato and William Hay of the Wanderers are to be congratulated on coordinating and bringing this outstanding event to Bolton. "It's an honour to be chosen to host a round and it's an indicator about the work the club has done and the facility we have developed," says Nick. "The time and money that the club has invested in the park is substantial and we're pleased that the soccer community is recognizing the results." For an opportunity to see some of the best youth soccer in the province, Edelweiss Soccer Park is the place to be June 16 and 17. Spectators are most welcome. |
