Kinetico Kids of Steel Triathlon Sunday, May 27 C3 the Canadian Cross Training Club (a not for profit Inglewood based health and fitness club) in partnership with Kinetico (a local Caledon business specializing in water purification systems) will together be hosting the 7th annual Kinetico Caledon Kids of Steel Triathlon at Caledon Central Public School. This annual community event was designed to get the whole family involved in a variety of athletic activities based around the rapidly growing sport of triathlon. The skills of swimming, cycling and running are combined to offer a broad range of age specific distances to challenge the novice and veteran alike. Children as young as three (3) years of age will each swim one length of the Caledon pool and may do so wearing a life jacket or even having mom or dad join them in the water. They will then run from the pool to their bicycles/tricycles and then ride 100 meters down the school's paved driveway, immediately followed by a 100-metre run on grass to the finish line ( one parent may accompany their child under 6 yrs. of age from start to finish). Starting at 6 and 7 years of age things start to get more competitive and each successive two year age category will compete (without parental assistance) at distances which increase progressively from (a 50-metre swim, 1.5-kilometre bike and 500-metre run), up to the adult distances of (400 meter swim, 15-kilometre bike and 5-kilometre run). Race director Stewart Barclay says "that the sport of triathlon has grown in popularity across Canada and more specifically throughout Ontario ever since Simon Whitfield won the Olympic gold medal at the 2000 Athens games. In 2000 there were less than 15 triathlon races offered in Ontario and now there are more than 80 races offered of which our May 27. KOS Race is the only one offered in the Town of Caledon." Organizers encourage participants and volunteers to join them for the day, cheer on a family member or challenge your own fitness level. Further details about the race, how to register, or other programs offered by C3"can be found at www.c3online.ca or by phoning 905-838-2662. |
