Fund-raiser for Shakespeare Link

In 2005, Cathy MacKinnon, who grew up in Palgrave, traveled with 3 other Canadians to Mozambique, Africa to work with the theatre-dance group Montes Namuli using Shakespeare to do AIDS education. In 2006, Shakespeare Link brought 16 of the Mozambican performers to Canada for five weeks. They performed at the International AIDS Festival in Toronto and at numerous other locations including Palgrave and Bolton.

This summer, Shakespeare Link returns to Mozambique. They will be working on a new play for performances in area villages. They will be doing some rebuilding of homes destroyed this past year in natural disasters.

Cathy MacKinnon and other Shakespeare Link members will be joined for part of the summer by local resident, Joyce MacKinnon, who is a member of Palgrave United Church. Joyce will be working with United Church of Canada teacher, Karen Butt, at the PEDRA school for girls orphaned by the AIDS pandemic. The Shakespeare Link volunteers must pay their own travel costs as well as needing money for theatre rentals, building supplies, etc.

The public is invited to a fund-raiser for this cause. A benefit concert and promotional event will be held Sunday, May 27 at 7 p.m. at Bolton United Church at 8 Nancy Street. Singing by Palgrave United Church choirs. Admission is a free willing offering (receipts for income tax will be mailed).

Please plan to join them at this important event. If you cannot attend but wish to support this work, donations may be sent through Palgrave United Church, 34 Pine Avenue, Palgrave L7E 0L9 or call 905 880-0303. Cheques may be payable either to the church (memo Shakespeare Link) or payable directly to Shakespeare Link.

Please help with this important work. Together, we can make a difference!
