Peel Children's Water Festival arrives

The Peel Children's Water Festival (PCWF) at Heart Lake Conservation Area is back again for another year, to teach Peel students and residents about the importance of water, in an engaging and fun environment.

"This year's theme, Only Tap Water Delivers, reminds us that tap water is essential to public health, fire protection, support for the economy and our quality of life," said Kristina Liivoja, co-ordinator of the festival. "The Region provides over one million residents with drinking water of superior quality at an affordable cost that exceeds Ontario's safe drinking water standards."

May 24 and 25 and from May 28-30, students in Grades 2-5 from schools across Peel will visit more than 50 interactive activity centres to learn not only about how tap water delivers, but also the physical properties of water; the treatment and distribution systems for Peel's water; surface water and groundwater resources; and the interaction between people and water and how it affects the environment.

"With heightened interest in environmental issues, this year's festival takes on a greater role in fostering awareness of the importance of water and respect for the environment," added Liivoja.

Residents interested in getting outside, having fun and learning about water, can enjoy a free Family Fun Day at the PCWF Saturday, May 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Family Fun Day will include hands-on activities, fly fishing demonstrations and live entertainment. Visitors can also purchase a barbecue lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (while quantities last) with all proceeds going to charity.

The PCWF is an official Sun Safe event that fits the requirements of the Get Covered Peel, Sun Accreditation Program. For more information, visit peelregion.ca/health/getcovered.
