Anniversary Contest a huge success

The Caledon Citizen's month-long Anniversary Contest was a huge success, attracting 137 entries from readers far and wide. With more than $1,000 worth of prizes from generous sponsors, the contest became very popular, very quickly.

Given the often difficult nature of the brain teasers, that put entrants in very good company.

The first week proved the most difficult, with only a small percentage of entrants getting all three questions right. Most people didn't think a circle had any sides at all, or it was a trick question. Actually, any object with distinct partitions has at least two sides - an inside and an outside. With regards to what starts eternity and ends life, we received many very interesting and spiritual answers. Only a few found the simplest answer the best - the letter e. The question, what gets wetter when it dries - a towel!

Week two drew more interest, but still some of the questions stumped our readers. A deck of cards is put on the table, cut, but never eaten. A sponge holds water, even though it's full of holes. The more footsteps you take, the more you leave behind.

Readers sharpened their mental abilities by week three, handling the questions more easily. Your name belongs to you, yet others use it much more than you do. A wedding ring fastens two people, even though it only touches the one person wearing it. The more dirt you take away from a hole, the larger it becomes.

The final week's questions were a "gift" from Editor Mark Pavilons. The three words in the English language that being with "dw" are dwarf, dwindle and dwell. Shakespeare, in Hamlet, wrote "To be, or not to be: That is the question." Mark Pavilons has three children - Lexie, Liam and Kyleigh.

We've enjoyed presenting this fun-filled contest. And we appreciated the congratulatory notes. Congratulations to the winners!
