Obtain a permit before you burn
An Open Air Burning Permit must be obtained by all persons who intend to conduct open air fires in Caledon.

Open air burning permits are issued at no charge, and photo identification is required to complete the application.

A person may conduct as many fires as they wish during the calendar year in which the permit is issued. All permits expire Dec. 31 of each year. The permit must be obtained in person at the fire administration headquarters (6085 Old Church Road, Caledon East) between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Open air burning may be performed all year round, unless a burning ban is in effect. During the spring and summer, landowners may burn between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.; during the fall and winter, the hours are 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The issued permit must be readily available at the burning site upon request.

Failure to obtain an open air burning permit will result in a minimum fine of $300, in addition to a minimum invoice of $687 per hour for fire services.

Spring season increases the potential for grass fires, and Caledon Fire & Emergency Service encourages the public to use caution, common sense and sound judgment. Never turn your back on a burning fire. The grass and brush around us is starting to dry out, making it very easy for a fire to spread uncontrollably with help from a little bit of wind. Unattended burning is the most common cause; people burning carelessly and improper disposal of cigarette butts also poses a hazard.
