Day of Mourning recognized by Town

Friday, April 27 at 3 p.m. at Town Hall, the Town of Caledon will hold a ceremony to recognize the Day of Mourning.

The flags at all Town facilities will be lowered to half-staff, honouring those nationwide who have died, suffered injury, or experienced illness due to work-related causes. The Town of Caledon invites interested community members to join staff and Council for the ceremony.

The Day of Mourning was established in 1984 by the Canadian Labour Congress. The day is recognized by the federal and provincial governments to provide citizens, businesses, and municipalities the opportunity to remember and mourn for workers who lost their lives or suffer from occupational injuries and disease. April 28, 1914, the Workmen's Compensation Act was given third reading in the Ontario Legislature.

"I encourage all Caledon businesses to recognize the Day of Mourning in their workplace," said Mayor Marolyn Morrison. "The Town maintains a proactive approach towards safety - our procedures, policies and standards heighten employee awareness and responsibility throughout the corporation."

The Town employs a full-time health & safety coordinator, charged with the responsibility to identify potential or real hazards, and implement corrective actions to ensure staff and visitor safety.

All Town employees complete a safety training course shortly after they are hired. Continuous improvement to the Town's safety program is guided by an internal joint health and safety committee and through the education and training of employees.
