Caledon bantam Lightning triumphant at select Intra-City championship

The Caledon Lightning bantam team won first place in the Intra City round robin playoffs with a record of 4 wins and 2 ties.

All 15 skaters showed their hockey prowess with a record of 17 goals for, while goalies Jamie Rowley and Josh Lemont were outstanding, allowing only 6 goals in the 6 games played.

Second place went to the Brampton Sharpshooters with a record of 5 wins, 1 loss. You guessed it - their only loss was to the Caledon Lightning! Both teams earned the right to attend the Intra City Championship April 1 at 3:30 p.m. at Memorial Arena in Brampton.

Right from the first faceoff, the Lightning team was on the offensive, driving for the net and the all important first goal. The second shift earned this honour when Cole Lovell found the back of the net assisted by John Gizzarelli, Justin Tabani and the usual hard work from Travis Rumney. Michael Spagnuolo then stepped up to the challenge putting the puck in the net while lying on his back - look out Ovechkin! Assists went to Dylan Stafford and John West-Carvalho. Score 2-0 Caledon.

The Sharpshooters then came back slipping a shot through the legs of goalie, Jamie Rowley. Jamie was solid for the entire game with the assistance of the stand-up performances from defencemen Dylan Eagles, Justin Tabani, Mackenzie Footman, Corey Roberts and Nick Ruggiero.

From that point forward, the game belonged to the Lightning. Defenceman Mackenzie Footman made an excellent defensive move keeping a bouncing puck inside the blue line. He quickly settled the puck down and shot it at the net. Spagnuolo, while on his knees, fed the rebound into the back of the net for his second goal of the game.

Every line contributed to the score when Peter Bowman passed the puck to Mitch Theeuwen who then passed to Evan Carriere who did a beautiful "Sundin-like" wrap-around goal. The final goal of the game was an empty-netter scored by the hard-working Spagnuolo, completing his hat trick. Fantastic job Michael! Assists came from Tabani and Corey Roberts.

Caledon Lightning won the championship with a final score of 5-1. The team proudly accepted the championship trophy which will be left on display at Memorial Arena. Special thanks to the coaching staff: head coach John Carvalho, trainer Russell Roberts, Jeff Theeuwen, Tony Ruggiero and team manager, Pierrette Ayotte for their hours of hard work and dedication to the team. The team would also like to thank sponsors Cavalier Transportation, Computer Enhancement Corp., Aquicon Construction, Sylvana Tabani from Royal Le Page and Trendway Transportation for their support.
