Peel favoured for 211

Caledon council recently supported Peel region's position that the 211 service in Peel be delivered by the region starting in December 2007, subject to provincial funding for startup costs.

Dialing 211 allows residents to obtain information and referral to a full range of non-emergency social, health and government services in their community.

Currently in Canada, 211 services are offered by the City of Toronto (June 2002), City of Edmonton (September 2004), City of Calgary (January 2005), Niagara region (November 2005) and the Town of Collingwood (November 2005).

Halton region has indicated it would like to provide 211 service to 312 households in Caledon which are located within the Georgetown telephone exchange. Caledon staff recommended council support Halton's proposal for delivery of a 211 service.

Council will request from Halton region the proposed boundary telephone exchanges to which Halton region and Peel region will deliver service.
