Bryan creates possibilities

Beside a babbling stream, in the hills of Headwaters, a little white house with a beautiful garden underwent a transformation. The insides were gutted and transformed from a decades-old, poorly functioning house into a beautiful, functional home.

The vision was created by interior designer, Elizabeth Bryan. Her firm, Bryan Interior Design Inc., is located in Caledon. Elizabeth has been helping homeowners create new and improved spaces for almost 10 years.

"I love helping clients see the possibilities their homes possess. I am fortunate that I am able to see the finished product in my mind at the start of a project and it is very fulfilling to make it a reality for my clients," she says.

Not every home needs to be completely renovated. "Sometimes it is a matter of tweaking the layout of a home but in other cases plumbing and old wiring need to be updated," she says, and this is where a professional is very useful. The wonderful thing about hiring an interior designer is that they are trained and licensed to help clients in matters of not only design but also function, health and safety matters as well.

Bryan says that designers "must pass a rigorous test of their knowledge of building code and safety concerns" and they must keep up to date with regular continuing education.

Homeowners need to be aware that projects are not at all like what they see on television.

"I actually had a client once who asked me to complete her renovation over the weekend," laughs Bryan. The reality is much different. She cautions homeowners to "spend time with your designer. Be up front about budget, time restrictions and expectations."

A project should begin with a thorough discussion of likes, dislikes, needs and wants. "A contract is for everyone's protection. It outlines expectations to all parties so that everyone can feel comfortable to proceed."

Bryan adds that it is important to feel comfortable where you live. "After all, I don't live there. You do. My job is to help you make your house your home."
