Caledon minor atom AA Hawks end season in Niagara Falls
The first game had the Hawks beating the familiar Ancaster Avalanche team 2- 0. Sean Nottle got his team started with a shorthanded Caledon goal from a pass from Nicholas Amato. Jordan Bokla scored the only second-period goal in a passing play with Nando Sirianni and Nicky Curro. Solid defensive play and great goaltending by Joseph D'Amico kept Ancaster off the score sheet. The early morning second game was a 5-0 win over Guelph Storm. This proved to be a very important win for the Hawks later in the tournament. Connor Morro and linemates Whitten and Nottle worked quickly to get the first Caledon goal early in the first period. Jesse Fir dug the puck free and netted the second goal with Christian Hauck and David Pillsworth helping out. Bokla did it all on his own with a shorthanded end to end rush to make the score 3-0 Caledon. Nicky Curro teamed up with Bokla to score the next goal and Whitten finished up with the fifth Caledon goal with some great passing in and around the opposition net with Morro and Nottle. Spencer Boyd got the shutout for the Hawks. After a long wait, the third game of the tourney was not successful for the Caledon boys. Aurora Tigers got ahead by two goals by the end of the first before Mitchell Duggan fired a hard shot from the blue line into the back of the Aurora net to make the game closer. Aurora came back in the third with another goal which gave them the 3-1 win. The Hawks advanced to the semifinal game only to meet the Aurora team once again. After again letting the opposition get the first goal, the Hawks put it together when Nottle directed the puck into the net right off a face-off win from Whitten. Connor Morro scored a shorthanded goal from Laura Magliocchi in the third to seal the 2-1 win for the Hawks. Hawk goalie Boyd made several key saves to keep his team alive. Strong play from the defensive team of Lukas Richardson, Jordan Kreller, Nicholas Amato, Justin Donatelli, Mitchell Duggan and Laura Magliocchi was instrumental in this hardfought win. Championship Game The exciting championship game had everything a great game should have including one overtime period and a shootout. The Clarington team scored two goals before Caledon tied it up with third period goals from Whitten and Fir. Assists were awarded to Fir, Hauck and Pillsworth. After the overtime period the game still remained tied. Unfortunately, the Hawks came up one goal short in the shootout and had to settle with the finalist title. It had been an action-packed game with two well deserving teams! The Caledon Hawks minor atom AA season included a record of 19-7-2 in regular season and 5-1-0 in Tri-County playdowns. The team participated in five tournaments and was champions of Georgetown Best of the Best, silver medalists at the Stratford Regional Silverstick and finalists at the Niagara Thunder tournament. The team was led by head coach Dan Whitten, assistant coach Michael Bokla, trainer Larry Richardson, trainer Mike Morro, stats coach Tim Duggan and team manager Lynda Whitten.
