Fraud Warning

for Retailers

Thursday, March 8, two retail businesses in Caledon East fell victim to a quick-change scam. In the two separate incidents, a male purchased an item at a value of about $5. In both cases, the male paid for the item with a $100 bill. The cashiers checked the bill and after finding it to be authentic they prepared to gather the change. The male interrupted the cashier in both situations and requested a bag for the purchased item. While the cashier was distracted to retrieve the bag the culprit took back the original $100 bill. The culprit was then given the correct change for the purchase without the cashiers realizing that the original bill was also taken.

The suspect in this scam has been described as male, 40 years of age, dark skin, possibly East Indian, partially bald but also seen wearing a ball cap.
