'Green Days' introduce organics recycling

Throughout March and April, the Region of Peel will host a series of Green Days at grocery outlets, malls and big-box stores in Peel. These interactive community events will give Peel residents an opportunity to learn about the new Organics Recycling Program that starts April 2 in Caledon, Brampton and Mississauga.

Region of Peel staff will have an organics recycling booth set up at each Green Day event, and will be available to answer questions about the program. Residents can interact with staff and learn about the materials used in the Organics Recycling Program, such as the green bin, kitchen container, various bin liners, and examples of what items are accepted and are not accepted in the program.

"We would like to see as many people as possible drop by and talk to Peel staff at our Green Day events," said Andrew Pollock, director of waste management. "With resident participation, this program has the potential to divert up to 30 per cent of household waste from disposal."

The Region of Peel's new weekly Organics Recycling Program will enable residents to easily dispose of household organic material, such as food waste and soiled paper products. Green organics bins are currently being delivered to all households in Peel that receive curbside waste collection. Delivery of the green bins will be complete by March 23.

Inside the green bin, residents will find a kitchen container; an information magnet that contains a list of acceptable and not acceptable items; an instruction manual that explains how to participate in the program; and the 2007 Waste Management Guide that contains information on all of Peel's waste and recycling programs. Further information can be found at peelregion. ca/waste.

The next Caledon Green Day will be held March 17, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wal-Mart on McEwan Drive.
