By MARK PAVILONS Editor

Caledon's committed businesses received some impressive honours Friday night from the Town of Caledon and Chamber of Commerce, during the annual Business Excellence Awards night.

Mayor Marolyn Morrison thanked the Chamber for supporting our businesses on a regular basis. She added during the past three years, the Town has worked hard to attract new business to the area. Caledon's location and relatively low tax rates make this municipality very desirable. In 2004, the Town enhanced its Economic Development and C o m m u n i c a t i o n s Department and has since enjoyed some immense growth.

In 2006, there were 650,000 square feet of new non-residential gross floor area created and we're poised for more positive growth this year. She said she couldn't be more proud.

Business of the Year

Charles Bristoll, chair of the Chamber's board of directors, said the Business of the Year award began in 1986 when the Bolton Rotary asked the Chamber to take over the reins. This prestigious honour goes to a business that displays exemplary ethics; commitment for its product or service; provides great customer service and is involved in the community. Bristoll noted the recipients of this award enrich the quality of life in the Caledon community.

The 2006 recipient is Paul Coffey's Bolton Toyota. Bristoll said among the local organizations and charities supported by Coffey since he set up in Bolton include minor hockey, the Home Show, Santa Fund, Weekend to End Breast Cancer, James Bolton public school, Caledon Community Services, Ellwood Memorial, Caledon Seniors' Centre, Wellness Centre, Canada Day committee, Rotary and United Way.

Cedar Hills Pontiac Buick Cadillac won a property award. Shown are (back, l to r) Charles Bristoll, Chamber board chair, Peel chair Emil Kolb, MP David Tilson, (front) Mayor Marolyn Morrison, Kay Blacklock of Cedar Hills and Sylvia Jones (representing MPP John Tory).

Morrison offered her congratulations noting we should all be proud of Toyota's accomplishments, dedication and leadership in the community. Bristoll admitted he found Coffey's team efforts humbling.

Paul Coffey said the night we very humbling for him.

When he took a chance and built a car dealership in Bolton, he was told the car business was going to be tough. Like most seasoned athletes, he came out swinging and said he immediately surrounded himself with good people, including mentor and partner Paul Loach. His team, and the assistance provided by Toyota's corporate head office, are second to none.

As far as his community involvement goes, Coffey said there's nothing like seeing young kids and grown-ups out skating at the Toyota rink he set up this winter.

The project was a couple of years in the making and this year received assistance from Bel Air, Hawkstone and Domenic Scrivo, as well as 80 truckloads of water courtesy of Caledon's fire department.

"It's about youth and giving back," he said. "It's a small thing we enjoy doing."

Property Improvement

The Town and Chamber laud businesses that make significant improvements to their properties and facilities and enhance the area's aesthetics.

Cedar Hills Pontiac Buick Cadillac was this year's recipient and owner Kay Blacklock was pleased to receive the award.

She pointed out this is the only award they haven't won in the past two decades in Bolton. The dealership recently underwent an extensive remodeling of its showroom and drive-through service department.

In a humorous jab at Coffey, she said he may win a handful of award, but she will always be on up on him - as a recipient of Woman of the Year.

She recalled the early years of the Chamber when original members gathered in fun networking sessions.

Summit Dodge was the recipient of the award for new construction on a vacant lot and Stephen Hughes was on hand to receive the award.

Impact Award

The Chamber, Town and Husky Injection Molding partnered to recognize corporate social responsibility through the Impact Award, which awards businesses that employ environmentally responsible practices.

The recipient for 2006 was All Stick Label. The company produces and markets label and package identification products via stateof the-art production. Utilizing very high standards in all aspects of its business, All Stick Label also focuses on waste reduction and their priority is to provide sustainable packaging solutions. They are a pioneer in PLA pressure sensitive label development.
