Dorado Stars qualify for 2008 Olympic trials

The Dorado Stars Swim Club recently attended the Eastern Canadian Junior Championships held in Montreal, Quebec. Head Coach Brian Kelly and three of the club's top swimmers Paige Miller, 15; Esther Haines, 14, and Alana Colgan, 13 represented the Dorado Stars at the swimming event.

After an outstanding weekend of top performances each of the girls qualified to attend senior nationals. They broke five club records, achieved 12 out of 15 personal best times and each secured a spot at the 2008 Olympic Trials to be held in Montreal.

In the girls' 1,500-metre freestyle event Esther Haines placed 11th overall with a best time of 17:35 minutes and 16th overall in the 800m freestyle. Paige Miller followed and finished 14th overall in the 50m butterfly with a time of 28.92 seconds. She also scored a final in the 100m butterfly finishing 23rd with a best new time of 1:04.48 minutes. Alana Colgan finished in 15th place with an outstanding 200m backstroke and a new best time of 2:18.67 minutes. She finished 10th overall in the 100m backstroke preliminaries but due to injury was unable to swim the 100m backstroke finals. She completed her weekend with a 13th place finish in the 50m backstroke with a new best time of 30.86 seconds.

Overall the weekend was an outstanding experience for the athletes, coach and swim club, one which all Dorado Stars members are proud of.
