Early morning house fire

Wednesday, Jan. 24 at approximately 5:18 a.m., Caledon Fire & Emergency Services responded to a report of a house fire received from a 911 call. Upon arrival firefighters found smoke visible from the exterior and additional assistance was requested.

Fire crews entered the smoke-filled house for an interior attack and descended into the basement to the fire location reported to them by the occupant. Crews were successful in extinguishing the fire preventing it from spreading to other areas of the home. Aprimary and secondary search of the residence confirmed all occupants had evacuated the residence. There were no injuries.

There were no working smoke alarms in the home. The owner has been charged under the Ontario Fire Code for the lack of required smoke alarms and failing to maintain smoke alarms in operating condition.

Residents are reminded that properly maintained and working smoke alarms are required on every storey as well as outside all sleeping areas of every home. In most cases, a working smoke alarm is the only early warning of fire that residents will receive.

The cause is under investigation and damage is estimated at $40,000.
