Inquest into death of construction worker

Dr. William Lucas, regional supervising coroner for central Ontario, announced an inquest will be held into the death of Aleksandar Scapec.

Scapec, 28, died Dec. 2, 2005 as a result of injuries sustained while working at a construction site in south Caledon. Under the Coroners Act, an inquest is mandatory when a worker dies as a result of an accident at a construction project. The inquest will review the events surrounding his death and may result in commendations aimed at the prevention of deaths in similar circumstances.

The inquest, which is expected to last two days, will begin at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 20 at the Caledon Provincial Offences courthouse in Caledon East. Dr. Dirk Huyer will preside as inquest coroner and Crown Attorney MaryEllen Cullen from the Dufferin Crown's office will act as counsel to the coroner.
