Fire damages at Benson Steel

On Friday, Jan. 19 at roughly 8:44 p.m., Caledon Fire & Emergency Services was dispatched to a commercial property fire at Benson Steel, 72 Commercial Rd.

Upon arrival, firefighters located a fire in the foyer of the office area. Investigation revealed that sparks from an arc welder had ignited cardboard boxes in the foyer and possibly spread into an interior wall.

There was heavy smoke throughout the first and second floors of the office complex. The fire was quickly extinguished and the building was searched. It took some time for firefighters to ventilate the building.

The cause, according to Caledon Fire & Emergency Services, was careless use of welding equipment. Damage is estimated at $20,000.

Agencies responding included Bolton, Caledon East and Palgrave Fire stations, Peel EMS and Caledon OPP.
