Elizabeth Scavetta Memorial short story contest winners

Heather Scavetta, Dr. Win Mellor-Hay, winners Kira Dorward, Mathew Fierke, and Kelley Potter, Manager of Children and Young Adult Services, announce the success of the annual Elizabeth Scavetta Memorial short story contest.
Wednesday, Nov. 15, the Caledon Public Library announced the winners of the fifth annual short story contest for young adults.

The winners were Kira Dorward, first place; Mathew Fierke, second place, and Rita Jhajj, third place. All of the entrants were acknowledged with comments from the judges. The judges this year were Robert McAlpine, distinguished poet and author and Dr. Win Mellor-Hay who has her PhD in literature and has taught writing at the university level for many years. The judges were impressed with the caliber of the writing and encourage all of the writers to continue to write.

Before the winners of the writing contest were announced, Heather Scavetta, mother of Elizabeth Scavetta for whom the contest is now named, read Elizabeth's winning entry from three years ago. All participants of the contest were given a booklet with many of Elizabeth's other writings. As well, the Scavetta's added to the prize money from the Elizabeth Scavetta Memorial Foundation. Heather mentioned how proud she was that she was sharing one of Elizabeth's stories with the crowd of young writers.

You can also read all of the winning entries online at the library Web site - www.caledon.library.on.ca.

Also a reminder to our young writers to watch for the Caledon Public Library's Young Adult Poetry Contest and Short Story Contest for Kids coming in March.
