Cavalier minor atom AE Hawks win two before holiday break The Cavalier minor atom AE Caledon Hawks won two and lost one for a pre- Christmas 13-4-5 record. Way to go Hawks. Their sights are set on the upcoming Niagara-on-the- Lake Tournament. Caledon 4, Guelph 3 The drive to Guelph was worth it as the Hawks came back with another win. The Hawks had a rough start as they began playing with a short bench as one player went to the wrong rink and two others were stranded on the side of the road with mechanical trouble. The first period ended scoreless. In the second the Hawks found the net after some continued hard work. Riley Telfer popped the scoreless tie with help from Kyle Graham 30 seconds into the period. Carter Ledson then added to the lead with Steven Smythe and Zach Wilson assisting. Caledon took this lead into the third and Marc Anthony Simonetta added another from Jake Stronach and Ledson. The Hawks ran into penalty trouble and some sloppy play. They did manage to kill a 2-man penalty but Guelph tied the game on two power plays and an unfortunate bounce. Not giving up, Graham and Telfer produced the winning goal less than a minute later. Solid goaltending by Koby Stronach pulled out another win for the Hawks. Georgetown 3, Caledon 2 The Hawks' next game was against their rivals at Georgetown Memorial Arena. The game was a back-and-forth contest with neither team able to convert early. It wasn't until the second that Georgetown opened the scoring with a power-play goal. Without a let down the Hawks kept attacking and weren't rewarded until Quinn Richardson picked the top corner from the blue line. The third started with the game tied at 1. The Hawks fell behind again but as before they came back. Richardson's point shot produced a nice rebound and Wilson capitalized. But later in the game, after some trouble clearing the zone the Hawks gave up another goal and this time could not answer. Caledon 4, Waterloo 1 With a loss to their rivals fresh in their minds, Waterloo Ice came to Mayfield to face a determined Hawks team. The first seemed to be in the Hawks' hands but a late goal ended the first with the Hawks down one. The Hawks were having trouble finishing some great plays until Daniel Fusco set up Graham off a face-off and the game was tied. Fifteen seconds later J. Stronach streaked down the wing taking two defenders deep and passed to an open Kevin Pleasance in front of the net to take the lead. On the next Hawks goal it was Stronach's turn to score, assisting was Wilson. In the third Pleasance returned the favour setting up Stronach for the fourth Hawk goal. The Hawks controlled the play until the end of the game and gave an early Christmas present to coaching staff and parents. |
