Peel, Sheridan introduce unique training program The Region of Peel, in partnership with the Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, has developed a water and wastewater education program for municipal operators who work on the water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Peel and Sheridan have developed a course curriculum and recruited qualified industry experts to teach the courses. This program is a first of its kind in the province and will set a new industry standard for water and wastewater training for municipal employees. The provincial Safe Drinking Water Act stipulates that municipal water and wastewater operators must complete up to 50 hours of training per year. The Peel-Sheridan partnership will assist operators in fulfilling the province's standards and fills the need for professional training programs in the water and wastewater industry. "The Ministry of the Environment has encouraged municipalities and post-secondary institutions to work together to develop new programs for the water and wastewater industry," said Jill Birch, vice-president of business and development at Sheridan. "Sheridan saw this opportunity and approached the Region about exploring an educational partnership; it is our hope that we will be able to expand this program to other municipalities across Ontario." This joint program will benefit operators through the opportunity to enhance their skills at a recognized post-secondary institution and obtain higher levels of certification. "We are dedicated to continuously finding more ways of ensuring our drinking water is always of the highest quality," said Mitch Zamojc, Peel public works commissioner. "Providing our water and wastewater operators with opportunities for additional expert training is one of the best ways to accomplish our objectives." Courses for Peel operators began in November. Upon completion of the eight-course Water Supply and Distribution Program, participants will receive a completion certificate from Sheridan Institute. The Wastewater Collection Program - Phase 2 is currently under development.
