Minor atom Hawks win two and tie one The Cavalier Minor Atom AE Hawks gained another five points in their push to first place. Caledon 4, Kitchener 3 Kitchener came to Mayfield only to go home frustrated. Early in the first, it was all Hawks. They had numerous opportunities while Christian Ciraco stopped all Ranger attempts. Kyle Graham opened the scoring assisted by Riley Telfer. But the Rangers scored two quick goals and the first ended 2-1 in favour of the visitors after the Hawks had one called back. Caledon came out strong and great penalty kills by Steven Smythe, Jake Stronach, Telfer and Quinn Richardson kept them in the game. Smythe and Zach Wilson set up Kevin Pleasance late in the period and the game was tied. Koby Stronach took over in net and even though the visitors scored the go-ahead goal, the Hawks finally took over. Wilson tied the game at 3 from Marc Anthony Simonetta and Callan McCorriston. After some strong play in the offensive zone, J. Stronach scored the winning goal, assisting were Smythe and Pleasance. With great defensive play and goaltending, the Hawks controlled the rest of the game even when the visitors pulled their goalie. Special thank you to Meghan Stronach for reporting on this game, great notes. Caledon 3, Georgetown 3 Georgetown was the next visiting team. The first period ended scoreless and the second continued with neither team taking charge. Georgetown got on the scoreboard first with a questionable goal. The Hawks did not give up and their work paid off as Kyle Graham tied the game late in the second, assisting were Richardson and Telfer. The Hawks took two early penalties in the third and gave up a goal. Midway through the third Simonetta and Sarah Power set up Wilson to tie the game at 2. Just over a minute later Wilson scored to give the Hawks the lead, assists to Simonetta and McCorriston. The game seemed to be in Hawks hands until a late goal during a 4 on 4 ended the game in a tie. Caledon 2, Cambridge 1 Caledon then travelled to Cambridge looking for revenge after a tie earlier in the season in a rough game. The Hawks started out slow in the first and were fortunate to have it end in a scoreless tie. During the second the Hawks began playing harder but had some bad bounces and came up short and the period ended 1-0 for the home team. The third produced even better Hawk play and Smythe took advantage on a power play to tie the game, assists to Pleasance and Richardson. A minute later Wilson combined with Simonetta and Carter Ledson to give the Hawks the lead. The Hawks stood tough in the face of some Cambridge attacks that saw one ejection from the game. The Hawks managed to kill some short-handed situations and pulled out a win. |
