Peel board approves budget, despite $124 million funding gap
      Trustees of the Peel District School Board approved a budget of $1.2 billion for the 2007-08 school year. This balanced budget is a $73 million increase in Ministry of Education funding from last year. However, the funding gap between grants and actual costs in areas such as transportation and staff costs is $45 million.

Peel announces air quality initiatives
      The Region of Peel and other GTA municipal and regional governments, the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada announced their initiatives to improve air quality at the 2007 Smog Summit held at Toronto City Hall June 7.

RIBFEST A BIG HIT!
     A highlight of the first-ever Caledon Kids Fun Fair was the Canadian Ribfest Challenge. An esteemed panel of judges that included Caledon Citizen Editor Mark Pavilons, Leanne Waterman, Councillor Doug Beffort, Mayor Marolyn Morrison and Caledon Agricultural Society president Ed Taccone had the tough job of picking the best finger-licking ribs. The winner was Jack the Ribber and the best sauce was from Crabby's BBQ Shack.

Watson property of heritage value
      The Joseph Watson property at 45 Nancy St. in Bolton was recently deemed by Caledon council to be worthy of heritage designation. Council directed staff to proceed with the notice of intention to designate. Council's decision came after Heritage Caledon concluded this property is of cultural heritage value and interest.

Davis Centre sale and silent auction a great success
      May 26 dawned fine and warm which spelled success for the annual sale and silent auction at the Davis longterm care Centre in Bolton. The event was under the active and enthusiastic direction of Pearl Auer, president of the Helping Hands Volunteers and Helen Banna, supervisor of volunteer services for the Davis Centre.

Romance at St. Andrew's Stone Church
      For the second year, soprano Ali Armstrong will be filling St. Andrew's Stone Church with beautiful music. Sunday, June 24 at 3 p.m., Ali will delight the audience with a program called Romance on a Summer's Day, featuring romantic music spanning 400 years.

      Caledon OPP will present a Drive Wise seminar Thursday, June 21 at Rotary Place seniors' centre in Bolton, from 2-4 p.m. Constable Linda Kennedy will present this CARP-sanctioned program, primarily designed for seniors.

Team ready for this weekend's Relay for Life event
      A celebration of survival and a tribute to the lives of loved ones who have been touched by cancer takes place this weekend at the Brampton Fairgrounds. The annual Relay for Life involves 12 hours of fun, friendship and fund-raising to beat cancer. Communities from coast to coast, will be taking up the fight.

Peel board invests more than $500 million in schools, additions
      Gym class will never be the same for students from the 30 Peel District School Board schools that have been approved to receive a new gymnasium beginning this year. The reconstruction of school gyms is part of a half-billion-dollar investment the Peel board is making to build news schools and update existing ones.

Children in Uganda see benefits of Caledon's generosity
      Half-way around the world, school children in Africa are jumping for joy, thanks to the generosity of some Caledon students. Caledon Central Public School raised roughly $3,000 to build a school in Tekera, Uganda. They began their efforts in September of 2006 and held many fundraisers to collect the funds.

Police offer safety tips for homeowners, vehicle owners
      Caledon OPP officers responded to 12 property damage and five personal injury collisions during the week of June 4-10. High Miler of the Week Thursday, June 7, at roughly 9 p.m., Caledon OPP Constable Terry Girouard observed a northbound motor vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Highway 10 at Olde Base Line Rd. in Caledon.

Bolton firefighters to conduct home visits
      The Town of Caledon's Fire & Emergency Services Department takes a proactive approach to the prevention and control of fire through community education. From now through Sept. 30, the Bolton firefighters will conduct residential home visits in the village of Bolton. The firefighters will distribute information and answer questions about fire safety during these visits.
