Regional councillors appointed to committees
      At the first regular meeting of Peel regional council for the 2006-10 term, held Dec. 14, councillors were appointed to positions of chair and vice-chair of the sections of general committee, to local boards and to special purpose bodies for the Region of Peel.

Peel appoints new medical officer of health
      Peel regional council appointed Dr. David Mowat to the position of Medical Officer of Health (MOH), effective Feb. 19, 2007. Dr. Mowat brings an extensive background in public health at the federal, provincial and municipal levels, most recently at the Public Health Agency of Canada where he served as deputy chief public health officer, Public Health Practice and Regional Operations.

Province investing additional $34 million in Brampton hospital
      The McGuinty government is investing $34 million to help the William Osler Health Centre finish building its new 608-bed Brampton Civic Hospital site, Health and Long-Term Care Minister George Smitherman announced recently.

William Osler Health Centre changes smoking and cell phone use policy
Starting Jan. 14
      As part of a renewed focus on patient safety, William Osler Health Centre is expanding its smoke-free policy currently in place across all its properties. From Jan. 14, 2007, smoking will not be allowed in Osler parking lots, garages, vehicles and exterior walkways, in addition to all hospital facilities, offices and off-site clinics.

Transportation improvements at Peel-York boundary
      Peel region, in partnership with York region, has finalized plans to widen Regional Road 50 from Queen Street East to Castlemore/Rutherford Road, a joint roadway between the two regions. Construction is expected to commence in 2007 with anticipated completion in 2008. The project is expected to provide more capacity to the road network to meet current and future needs.
