How to get emergency medical care this holiday season

William Osler Health Centre is urging people to make this holiday season a safe and healthy one. If you have a medical emergency this holiday season, go to the emergency department. They are extra busy this time of year and long waits are common. However, if you have the most serious condition, you will be seen first.

If you are not sure whether it is an emergency, call Telehealth Ontario at 1- 866-797-0000 for free access to registered nurses who will help with any health-related problem. If you have any doubts don’t hesitate to call 911.

If you do need to go to the emergency department, please remember to bring your Ontario Health Card along with a supply of your prescription and nonprescription medications including vitamins and herbal remedies. Also bring your extended health insurance information in case you are admitted to hospital.

You can help by being prepared.

* Ask your doctor’s office about backup coverage, on-call services or after-hours clinics.

* Update all emergency telephone numbers and post them in a visible place. * Keep first aid supplies handy and fill all prescriptions ahead of time.

* Know where the nearest 24-hour pharmacy is located.

* Ensure your house number is well lit after dark.

* Remind visiting family members to bring their Ontario Health Card or their health insurance information available.

An ounce of prevention!

Many illnesses and injuries that occur are preventable. You can avoid a trip to the hospital by taking some simple precautions:

* Get a flu shot. * Do not drink and drive.

* Be fire safe: do not overload power outlets or leave candles burning, keep natural trees well watered, and do not place decorations near fireplaces.

* Use extra caution when driving on snowy or icy roads.

* Equip your car with snow tires, an ice scraper, blanket, first aid kit, and windshield wiper fluid.

* Keep your sidewalks and walkways clear of ice and snow.

* Avoid shoveling heavy snow if you are unused to strenuous activity.

* Ensure you and your children wear protective equipment when participating in winter sports (hockey helmets, face shields, mouthguards, etc).
