By Donna Davies

George Berney with his wife Lynda and three sons (to r) David Berney, lawyer with Wood & Bull Law Firm; Lynda & George Berney; Geordie Berney, architectural design technician, employed at Berney’s Hardware; James (Jim) Berney, Warrant Office - Unit Sgt. Major - Military Police, Pettawawa.
More than 150 of George and Lynda Berney’s closest friends dropped by to congratulate them on 125 years in business in Caledon East.

George Berney’s grandfather, another George W. Berney, started the hardware business on the main street of Caledon East in 1881 and as they say, the rest is history!

People came to the November meeting of the Caledon East and District Historical Society to hear George speak about the history of his store and to enjoy the display of the various artifacts, which he has collected over the years.

Lynda and George were also pleased that their three sons, James (Jim), David and Geordie, as well as some of their cousins, could be present for this wonderful tribute to their 125 years serving Caledon East.

Mayor Marolyn Morrison presented George with the best wishes of the Caledon council and with a plaque of congratulations. Previously George had received citations from the prime minister, MP David Tilson and MPP John Tory.

Mayor Marolyn Morrison presented a plaque, congratulating George Berney on Berney’s Hardware 125 years of service.
The evening was like “old home week” for the people of Caledon East and area, who have enjoyed a chance to chat or share a joke with George while shopping at Berney’s Pro Hardware Store. They left with a warm feeling, having attended a party for a respected neighbour and friend.
