Alton businesses offer a treasure trove for shoppers

When was the last time you actually stopped in the Village of Alton? Like a lot of our towns and villages in the area, there is a lot going on that may not be visible at first glance. A quick tour starts with

the Alton Green House on main St. Cindy and Bill have Christmas trees, and seasonal greenery. Did you know they grow a wide variety of plants in their own greenhouses? Across the road is Fred’s

Old’en Day Treasures where you can hunt through antiques and reproduction furniture.

At the four corners, turn onto Queen St. and hit Ray’s Bakery. No trip to Alton would be complete without sampling some of their breads, treats & light meals.

Next door is The Nutmeg Gallery, featured recently in the Toronto Star’s “shoestring shopper.” You will find a mix of art, antiques and home décor items. Have you seen her famous button bracelets?

Across the road, step back in time in the Historic Alton Mill, creative arts studios. This is home to The Headwaters Arts Festival, representing a wealth of local artists in all mediums including clothing. Stay in the mill and find the newest business in Alton, Gallery Gemma, offering designer jewellery, and one-of-a-kind pieces, many handmade by the owner, on site.

Down the road, on the bend in the curve is the Millcroft Inn and Spa, well known for their 5-star hotel, superb dining, and the recently renovated spa. When was the last time you had a relaxing drink in their bar with friends?

This Thursday, Dec. 14 the business owners in Alton are having a special day and evening of shopping from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Some of the merchants have discounts to offer you, and most importantly you will find small town service with worldclass merchandise. They will even have carollers strolling to entertain you and refreshments at various stops.

Why not plan an interesting and productive shopping trip and support the local businesses this Christmas?
