The Nutcracker at Mayfield
By Shannon Erdelyi

Mayfield dancers in The Nutcracker take a break from rehearsal to pose for a quick photo.
As the winter season approaches, the dance program makes preparation for Mayfield Secondary School's annual holiday performance. The immense amount of work required to create a successful show can be overwhelming, and this year's The Nutcracker is no exception. However, with the collaborative efforts of students, staff and members of the community, the dance show is nearing completion.

The Nutcracker combines a variety of movement vocabularies to produce a truly mesmerizing narrative. Although Mayfield students comprise the majority of the cast, children from the local area are also made part of the show.

All dance students assume different roles in the show. Grades 9 through 11 are required to perform, while grade 12 students take on leadership roles. However, all Mayfield students, despite their involvement in the arts program, are welcome to audition to become a member of the cast.

The Nutcracker does not only involve the cast. Extravagant sets are created with the help of visual arts students and other volunteers. Furthermore, technical crews work diligently to perfect music and lighting. A large production requires the involvement of many people, and the anticipated success of The Nutcracker is credited to the vast number of people who have dedicated their time and energy.

The Nutcracker will be performed for local schools, and for Mayfield students; but it is also open to the public on Friday, Dec. 1, and Saturday, Dec. 2. Viewing Mayfield's The Nutcracker is a great way to invite the holiday season, and to offer support to several members of the community.

To purchase your tickets please do so at Mayfield Secondary School any time from until the show dates. They are sold between 9:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets are $14 for adults and $7 for seniors and students. Tickets can also be purchased at the door, but come early to get the best seats.
