School kids help bring back Atlantics to Credit River

OFAH staff show the salmon to students at Credit View School, who helped in the restocking event in Caledon recently.
Students from Credit View public school left their mark in conservation history as they teamed up with the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and its partners to help bring back Atlantic salmon to Lake Ontario.

Participants helped with fish stocking in the Credit, at Forks of the Credit and Dominion Road.

Participants learned about the Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Project. Special guests included dignitaries and municipal candidates, as well as representatives from the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Ministry of Natural Resources and Banrock Station Wetlands Foundation Canada.

"It's been over a century since Atlantic salmon flourished in Lake Ontario, but thanks to the support and research of the MNR, ongoing stream stewardship efforts of groups such as Credit Valley Conservation, and the overwhelming support from OFAH sponsors and volunteers, Ontario can welcome back this lost ecological treasure," said Dr. Terry Quinney, OFAH provincial manager of fish and wildlife services.

Stocking the Credit River with Atlantic salmon is all part of a history-making conservation endeavor that was officially unveiled this past spring by the OFAH and its conservation partners, including Banrock Station Wetlands Foundation, LCBO, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and the Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association. Other project partners include Trees Ontario, Trout Unlimited Canada, Fishing Forever Foundation, WFN: World Fishing Network,

Ontario Wildlife Foundation, Ontario Trillium Foundation, Canadian Wildlife Federation and Fleming College.
