Book launched at school reunion
By Betty Ward
Almost 300 former students including some spouses gathered for a school reunion Sept. 30 at the Caledon Community Complex in Caledon East.
The school was formerly known as S.S. 14 Albion, 22 Caledon and 29 Chinguacousy and later called Caledon East School. In 2004 a reunion was held for all former staff and students up to 1948 when the continuation school closed. The reunion in 2006 included all former staff and students up to 1971 when the school closed. Some who attended had not seen each other for 40 or 50 years.
Displays included a school hand bell which rang at recess time calling students back to class, a large framed picture of Queen Victoria, a pendulum clock, a school desk, school readers a wooden pencil box and a desk bell that got the class attention as well as community pictures.
Following a delicious lunch several students from different eras recounted their many memories about the good old school days which brought much laughter. The highlight of the day was the sale of the historical book, entitled The School on the Hill, written by Murray Hesp and edited by Donna Davies. The book contains more than 1,800 names of students, about 130 pictures and many memories written by former students and teachers as well as the history of the school. It sells for $25 and is available at Berney's Hardware in Caledon East, from Jean Proctor at 905-584-2348, Russell Noble at 416-239-1113 and Betty Ward at 905-584-2189.
