Rights trampled by fair board regarding election t-shirts Listen up fellow citizens of Bolton and indeed all citizens of Canada! Our rights under the The Canadian Constitution have been trampled on by The Albion and Bolton Agricultural Society and I quote from a local news article (Campaign T-shirts are banned during the Bolton Fall Fair). "The Albion and Bolton Agricultural society decided last week that it will not allow people who are wearing campaign T-shirts; handing out flyers for candidates or waving campaign signs to enter the fairgrounds or walk in the parade." I also quote from, (in part), the Constitution Act, 1981 - Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms section 2: "Fundamental Freedoms: 2. Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms (a) freedom of conscience and religion; (b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication; (c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and (d) freedom of association" It seems as though tshirts bearing all sorts of suggestive quotes and pictures, some bordering on the obscene, were quite o.k. to wear to this public event but don't anyone dare show up with a t-shirt saying I support John Doe for mayor or Jane Doe for councillor or you will be banned from entering. Our nephew gave his life fighting for the people of Afghanistan so they might enjoy a little bit of what we take for granted here in Canada. It's too bad he's not here to help us while our basic constitutional freedoms are being attacked. Those who were responsible for this decision, in my opinion, need to be found out, publicly chastised and censored. Ken Lund Bolton |
