Winter driving tips for motorists to see and be seen

Winter driving has all sorts of challenges that melt from our minds during the summer months. Whether it's an unexpected snow storm, icy roads or the season's decreased visibility, it's important to make sure you are prepared to handle whatever Mother Nature has in store.

To help keep your driving record as clean as a fresh

snowfall on a crisp winter morning, follow these helpful hints from Alliance Tire Professionals.

Brush, Scrape & Sweep

Before your foot even touches the gas pedal, make sure any snow is cleared from your car. Brushing the snow off the windshield is a great start - but don't stop there. Make sure you clear all the windows and mirrors.

"Don't forget to brush the snow off your roof and hood," says Sheardown Auto Tire & Glass. "It may look harmless, but once you start moving it can slide down and obstruct your windshield and rear window views."

Lastly, don't forget to uncover your headlights and taillights to make sure you're seen on the road.

Snow Bank Smarts

Snow banks are an inevitable part of a Canadian winter, but don't let that block your view.

To maximize your visibility, avoid making left turns around snow banks whenever possible. It's better to make three right turns to get you back on track. Also, try to park in your driveway rear-end first. That way, when you leave, it

will be easier to see other cars and pedestrians around the snow banks. Lastly, remember to always proceed slowly and cautiously when emerging from behind snow banks, and when shoveling the driveway, take care not to let the banks get too high.

Light It Up

During the winter months when days are shorter and there is less daylight, it's

very important to make sure you can see and be seen on the road. Pay close attention to burned out headlights and taillights and replace them promptly. Also, to see better in snowy or icy conditions, drive with low beams.
