Roth Hawks in tournament action Roth Diamond Tools minor bantam AE Hawks started their tournament season early with a short trip to the GTHL Humberview Huskies. Sept. 14 saw the boys playing the Applewood Coyotes Getting used to the new rules proved challenging as 45 minutes of penalties were assessed. Applewood stuck first with a goal in each frame, twice with the man advantage, before the Hawks came to life. Then it was Brandon Richard potting one for the good guys with assistance from Nolan Pearce. Applewood answered back to be quickly rebutted by Tyler Symonds with help from J. T. Gore. With the time expired the Hawks bowed to a 4-2 defeat. Player of the game was Tyler Symonds. Game 2 was Saturday morning versus the Downsview Beavers. The Beavers notched a goal midway through the first on the power play. A minute later J.T. Gore evened the affair unassisted. In the second Gore counted the only marker with a nice feed from Ryan Rausch. Brandon Richard got things going again in the third with an unassisted goal. The Beavers then notched 2 on the power play to tie things up. With 5:29 remaining Ryan Rausch slammed one home assisted by Giancarlo Cianflocca and J.T. Gore. Downsview squared it again with 2:25 remaining and the Hawks killing yet another penalty. The game was settled at the 1:11 mark when Cianflocca struck paydirt off the set up from J.T. Gore and David Rothfuchs. Marco Chiechi made several solid stops between the pipes in the 5-4 victory. J.T. Gore was player of the game. Saturday afternoon was another wild penalty marred game this time versus Clarkson. The Clarkson squad started quickly getting a goal one minute in. Mid-way through the first Brandon Richard fired a rocket, putting Caledon on the board. Then it was Clarkson again counting a goal late in the second with the answer from Richard eight seconds later. The battle went end to end until with 25 seconds left Chris Scrivo drilled home what looked to be the winner only to see a remarkable major penalty assessed to the Hawks and the goal called back. Down a man and needing the win the Hawks gamely pulled their goalie and the game MVP Brandon Richard some how muscled in his hat trick goal with 13 seconds to go gaining the 3- 2 win. Nathan Cole played a strong game in the Hawks net. Game 4 was Sunday morning against the Markham Islanders. Markham counted first in the opening frame with Caledon's Giancarlo Cianflocca scoring 3 minutes later assisted by Chris Scrivo. The second saw Markham notch another early goal and they held on the rest of the way despite strong play from the Hawks. Marco Chiechi made a number of sensational saves and earned the MVP award for the Hawks. The lads finished the tournament 2 and 2 much the wiser for seeing the new rules in action. Go Hawks go! |
