Municipal election heats up as candidates file
By ALAN LICZYK Staff Reporter

There was some last day filing Friday at the Town Hall in Caledon East as the deadline for registering in the Nov. 13 municipal election passed.

Five candidates waited until the Sept. 29 deadline before signing up while there was also one last minute withdrawal for the Ward 2 area councillor position.

Former Caledon mayor Norm Calder was among the five people to file Friday as he makes his fifth bid for mayor. He will be running against incumbent Mayor Marolyn Morrison and current Ward 5 Area Councillor Garry Moore who's seeking the mayor's post for the first time.

Jim Pattison also waited until the last moment to file for the position of Ward 1 regional councillor which prevented Councillor Richard Paterak from being acclaimed.

Three people are vying for the position of Ward 2 regional councillor. They include current Ward 2 Area Councillor Allan Thompson, Donna Cragg and Dave Tatla.

There are also three people in the race for Wards 3 and 4 regional councillor including incumbent Councillor Nancy Stewart, former councillor Richard Whitehead and Tony Viola who also ran for this position in the last election.

George Niras was a last day filer for the position of Ward 5 regional councillor. His competition will be incumbent Councillor Annette Groves and Kelly Darnley, the president and chief executive officer of the Caledon Chamber of Commerce (who is now on leave from the Chamber).

Another trio of candidates are in the race for the position of Ward 1 area councillor which is being vacated by incumbent Councillor Jim Wallace. The three seeking to fill his shoes are John Martin, Doug Beffort and Tim Forster.

It looked liked there would also be three people running for Ward 2 area councillor, but Brian Shannon withdrew his name Friday leaving Stephen Townsend and Gord McClure to battle it out.

For Wards 3 and 4 area councillor, incumbent Councillor Nick deBoer has one challenger in Don McNeil.

In the race for Ward 5 area councillor, four candidates signed up to fill the spot left open when Moore decided to run for mayor. Former school trustee Sandro Scerni and Sandy Forester filed Friday while Egle Boudreau signed up Thursday to go against Jason Payne who filed in June.

Incumbent Peel district school board Trustee Valerie Arnold-Judge has three challengers in Stan Cameron, C. Josefine Scott and Donna Hynes.

The only acclamations for the election were incumbent Dufferin-Peel Catholic district school board Trustee Frank Di Cosola and French language public trustee Christine Guindy.
