The Region of Peel marked the construction of its joint headquarters and Peel Regional Police 21 Division facility with an official ground-breaking ceremony on the construction site at 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton.
Speaking at the event were Peel Regional Chair Emil Kolb, Mayor of Brampton Susan Fennell, Mayor of Caledon Marolyn Morrison, acting mayor of Mississauga Katie Mahoney, Peel Regional Police deputy chief Paul Tetzlaff, chair of the Region's management committee Gael Miles and CAO David Szwarc.
"Peel Region is a community of over one million people and continues to grow rapidly. That growth brings with it increased and complex needs which requires Regional Council to continually find ways to connect Peel citizens with our services even more effectively," said chair Kolb. "When this new facility opens in fall 2008, the on-site integrated service centre will be a gateway to many Regional services. As well, by bringing staff from multiple leased sites to this location, we will increase our ability to control operating costs into the future."
Bondfield Construction Company Ltd. recently began construction on the six-storey, 200,000-squarefoot facility that includes 30,000 square feet for Peel Regional Police 21 Division staff on two floors of the building, as well as three levels of underground parking. The new building will be joined with the current regional headquarters at the ground level.
"The growth of our community, along with the corresponding growth in police services, has created the need for a facility with greater capacity and more physical space," said chief Mike Metcalf. "We are very pleased that Regional Council has chosen a location that enables us to remain central to much civic activity in the area we serve."
The new facility will feature a one-stop service reception and a community resource centre that will provide social assistance, children's services, health services, social housing services and water and waste management services.
Costs required to build the facility include $49.6 million for construction and
an additional $6.9 million for permits, project management, construction contingencies and building commissioning. For more information on
