New heritage designation
By ALAN LICZYK Staff Reporter

The heritage designation bylaw for the Silver Creek Schoolhouse property at 16419 Kennedy Rd. was recently amended by Caledon council to provide for a more inclusive description of the property's heritage attributes.

The description will include the historic maple tree rows which delineate the property boundaries. The tree rows are believed to have been planted by students in celebration of Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1897. They are considered to be of cultural heritage value and interest as a contextual landscape feature typical of rural 19th century schoolhouse properties.

Councillor Richard Paterak asked if the new designation protects the trees. Planning director Mary Hall replied the adjacent property owner can remove branches.

Heritage resource officer Sally Drummond told Councillor Nick de Boer the owner isn't expected to keep a tree alive forever.
