Peel offers 24-hour emergency sewer services

The Region of Peel is now offering emergency sewer blockage services to Peel households - 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Sewer backups don't always happen during normal business hours and now residents can count on the Region of Peel for emergency assistance at any time of the day.

Most sewer backups occur when the sewer pipe that runs from your home to the Region's main sewer line becomes blocked with material such as roots or grease. The blockage causes sewer water to backup into your basement from the floor drain.

"Our new service hours gives Peel residents peace of mind knowing that if they experience a sewer backup, our staff will be there to assist them, day or night," said director of operations and maintenance Ric Robertshaw.

In case of a sewer backup in your home, call the Region of Peel at 905-7917800, ext. 4409. Residents in long-distance areas of Caledon can call 1-888919-7800, free of charge. A residential flat fee of $250 plus GST is charged for all service calls where the problem area is located on private residential property.

To help reduce sewer blockages and prevent backups from occurring in your home, avoid using drains or toilets to dispose of grease, oils, diapers, rags or other material that can harden or settle within the sewer pipes.

Visit their Web site at peelregion.ca for more information, or call 905791-7800, ext. 4409.
