Time to think about winterizing your vehicle Warm, leisurely driving conditions of the summer make it easy to forget that in only few short months, snow, ice, salt, slush and sleet will make everyday driving a more difficult and often more hazardoussituation. To ensure safe driving this coming winter, follow these easy steps for winterizing your vehicle. * A good set of winter tires is essential for safe winter driving, making accelerating and handling on slippery roads much easier. "All season" tires are sufficient but will not perform as well as authentic winter tires in the nastiest ice and snow. * Change your oil and filter in time for winter. Proper oil maintenance can mean longer engine life and improve fuel efficiency. * Check your muffler and exhaust pipes for leaks and general conditions each fall. Ensure the exhaust tail pipe is not obstructed when starting the engine. * Most windshield wiper blades, unless damaged, last about one year. You should consider investing in wipers made especially for winter driving conditions, and always be sure to use washer fluid specially made for colder temperatures. * Very cold temperatures will reduce a vehicle's battery power. Have batteries over three years old tested and make sure posts and connections are free of corrosion. * Consider rust proofing your vehicle as well. Winter driving conditions can severely damage the seams and spot welds of a vehicle. * Well before the season starts, put together an emergency kit to keep in your vehicle. It should include flashlight and batteries, flares, blankets, first aid kit, fuses, booster cables, sand bags, salt or kitty litter, compass, matches and candles, shovel, ice scraper and snow brush, gas line antifreeze, exterior windshield cleaner, bottled water and chocolate bars (they won't spoil and provide food in an emergency).
