Aug. 30, 1976, a group of 17 Chinese officials attended the official opening Norman Bethune's restored birthplace, run by Parks Canada. Bethune served as a surgeon during Mao's long march, and died of blood poisoning in China.

Aug. 30, 1988, Vicki Keith staggered ashore from Lake Ontario, ending her marathon five-lake swim, setting the women's world distance record of 38 kilometres for the butterfly stroke. She started her marathon July 1.
