Rezoning will allow addition to seniors building Peel region was granted a rezoning by Caledon council recently to permit an addition to the existing seniors apartment building and a free-standing Abbeyfield home at 20 Walker Rd. E. in Caledon East. The 0.9-hectare (2.2acre) site currently has a seniors apartment building consisting of 15 one-bedroom apartment units, each with a kitchen. The property abuts the privately owned portion of Greer Street to the south. The proposed addition will have 25 onebedroom apartment units. As part of the expansion, four of the existing onebedroom units will be converted to two twobedroom units, resulting in a total of 38 apartment units. The proposed Abbeyfield residence will include 12 rooming units without cooking facilities and one apartment unit for full-time support staff. There will be a minimum parking space requirement of one space per dwelling unit for the apartment building and 0.3 parking spaces per rooming unit or dwelling unit for the Abbeyfield residence. At a public meeting in July, residents expressed concern about overflow parking on Greer Street and the impact it would have on emergency vehicle access to the site. Councillors Nancy Stewart and Richard Paterak both said there will be enough parking at the facility. A site plan application is still required. Issues such as access, landscaping, site circulation and parking location will be reviewed through the site plan approval process. |
