Region launches literacy month in Peel Peel Regional council proclaimed September as Literacy Month to focus attention on the benefits of literacy and to highlight local opportunities for adults and families to improve their literacy skills. "The Region of Peel is dedicated to improving literacy levels of children as well as adults through a variety of programs and services available across the Region," said Councillor Susan DiMarco, chair of the Region's Human Services Committee. "Proclaiming Literacy Month in Peel provides a platform for our Regional service providers and a host of community agencies to stress the importance of literacy and to promote programs that can help adult learners and children build their literacy skills." "Higher literacy rates expand opportunities for individuals and their families and this contributes to the economic stability of Peel Region. It is an important way we can contribute to building safer, healthier and more vibrant communities," Councillor DiMarco said. One of the Region's most popular literacy programs is the Family Literacy Program offered in more than 70 schools throughout Peel. In this program, trained volunteers work with parents to gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes to support their child's language development and gain early literacy skills.
