Peel partners with farmers to create natural snow fences Driving during the winter months can be dangerous when faced with inclement weather such as blowing and drifting snow. Peel region is asking farmers in Peel with properties next to regional roads to allow the region to utilize their corn crop as natural snow fences during the winter months in an effort to increase winter road safety. Natural snow fences are maintenance free and provide a natural windbreak that can be just as effective as manufactured snow fences. "The region of Peel is committed to building strong partnerships and finding cost-effective solutions that help increase community safety and protect Peel's natural environment," said Ric Robertshaw, director of operations and maintenance. "Natural snow fences not only make our roads safer for drivers but are an environmentally responsible method of reducing winter roads maintenance." Farmers that are eligible will receive remuneration from the region, while providing a public service that will potentially save lives, money and time for the travelling public and Peel region. To qualify for the program, you must be able to leave up your corn crop as a barrier to snow and your property must be located next to a regional road. Natural snow fences offer the following benefits to the community: Accident prevention Improved driver visibility Lower winter maintenance costs Reduced salt usage For more information regarding the program, call Richard Sparham, technical analyst, at 905-791-7800, ext. 3294. Those living in long-distance areas of Caledon can call toll-free at 1-888-919-7800, ext. 3294. |
