Determined to get back into the winner's circle, a Bolton team battled through some tough matches on their way to capturing Mono Centre Over-95 Mixed Doubles tennis tournament held at Mono Centre Tennis Club recently.
Gisela Nouisser and Alan Liczyk won the championship for a third time after beating two-time defending champions Andrea and David Adsetts of Mono Centre in the final 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.
Nouisser and Liczyk previously won the tournament in 2002 and 2003, but were runners-up the last two years to the husband and wife team from the host club.
The Bolton pair could do no wrong in the opening set, but the Mono Centre couple started to crank it up in the second set. In the third and deciding set, the score was tied 3-3 when Nouisser and
Liczyk broke the serve of Andrea Adsetts to go up 4-3. Nouisser then held serve for a 5-3 lead. With David Adsetts serving the next game, the Bolton team broke serve again on their second match point opportunity to pull off the upset.
To reach the final, Nouisser and Liczyk had another tough battle in the semifinals where they edged Kathy and Alfred Tuitt of Caledon 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. The Adsettses defeated Colin Ashton and Wendy Gray of Palgrave in the other semifinal 6-1, 6-2.
In the consolation final, Catherine MacLennan and Mike Proudlock of Caledon beat Carol and Jason Hall of Mono Centre 7-6, 7-5.
There were 18 teams entered in the tournament which required each couple to have a combined age of 95 or more.
It also marked the last time Carol Hall of the Mono Cliffs Inn will sponsor the tournament which was in its 15th year and the last time
Rod Sanders will handle the duties of tournament director. The players and spectators gave them a rousing ovation during the trophy presentations for their great efforts over the years. Next year, Angella Hughes of Mono Centre Tennis Club will organize the tournament.
Other sponsors for this year's tournament were Creemore Brewery, Wellington Brewery, Lindaman's Wines and Farm House Pottery.
