Caledon Citizen, August 16, 2006 5 Community safety zone designated by council The designation of a community safety zone near Caledon Central public school was supported by Caledon council recently. Council amended a bylaw designating Kennedy Road a Town road as a community safety zone near the school and Caledon Pool. Peel regional council will be requested to amend the appropriate regional bylaw designating Charleston Sideroad a regional road as a community safety zone near the school. Motorists who are caught committing a moving offence in a community safety zone will be subject to an increased fine. The offences include aggressive driving behaviour such as speeding and careless driving which pose the greatest threat to public safety. The request for the community safety zone was made by Donalda Barlow, acting principal at Caledon Central public school. Councillor David Lyons asked Inspector Andy Karski, detachment commander of Caledon OPP, if there are too many community safety zones. Karski said the police are consulted and the requested areas have to meet certain criteria. He added they will look and assess each area on a case-by-case scenario. There are currently 12 community safety zones in Caledon. Five are on Town roads, six are on regional roads and one is on a provincial road. Town staff commented the location of a community safety zone on Kennedy Road and Charleston Sideroad near Caledon Central public school and Caledon Pool meets the criteria used in the designation of the previous community safety zones, that being a school area with high traffic volume. Councillor Richard Paterak pointed out Caledon Central was the only school on a regional road not included on the list of community safety zones. He added Belfountain public school is also interested in a community safety zone. The existing community safety zones include: Kingsview Drive from the east end of Longwood Drive to the west end of Longwood near James Bolton public school and The Humberview school; Kingsview Drive from Thornbury Road to Bolton Heights Road near Pope John Paul II school; Allan Drive from Regional Road 50 to Mellow Crescent; Ellwood Drive to Regional Road 50 near Ellwood Memorial public school; Innis Lake Road from Old Church Road to George Crescent near Robert F. Hall Catholic secondary school and St. Cornelius school; Old Church Road from 6221 Old Church Rd. to a point 0.6 kilometres east of Innis Lake Road near Robert F. Hall and St. Cornelius; Main Street in Alton from McClelland Road to Queen Street East near Alton public school; Mayfield Road at Bramalea Road near Mayfield secondary school; Regional Road 50 from Birch Avenue to Patterson Sideroad near Palgrave public school; King Street from Kennedy Road to Heart Lake Road near Herb Campbell public school; Highway 10 from Mayfield Road to north of Valleywood Boulevard near Brampton Christian school. |
